The NY Times had a story about the increasing trend toward sending child (nine years old) athletes to the sports psychologist to improve performance. I thought confidence was one of those things that parents were supposed to teach their kids.

It angers me to read things like this (not your post but the article). I completely agree with you that nurturing confidence in kids should be the parents' job, not a third pary sports shrink.
This obsession with children's achievment permeates everything these days, not just kids' sports. I live in Singapore and the academic pressure put on kids in schools in most parts of Asia start at an increadibly early age. You start wondering why we're not letting our kids be kids anymore. To my mind, that's the richest source for life learning one could possibly have as a child.
